Does kratom show up on a Drug Test?

For those of us who have to take a monthly drug test to keep our jobs, kratom offers a relaxing (and undetectable) way to unwind on a lazy Friday night.

As modern drug testing has improved, so has the list of accessible recreational drugs. Basically, these substances existed hundreds of years ago. Kratom was reportedly first used as a mild stimulant by Thai farmers and workers, who used the drug’s spiritual drive to find joy in life that was otherwise hard and unforgiving.

Kratom is generally sold as loose tea leaves, powder or in capsules. It is taken orally and has a mild psychoactive effect (it can be either invigorating or relaxing, depending on the dose and the individual). A small dosage will give you drive and increase concentration. This dose is often used to increase concentration and help promote a positive attitude.

A high dose will produce a deep feeling of relaxation and calm. The dosages are determined by the strain, as the potency of the strains varies greatly.

SO DOES IT SHOW UP ON A DRUG TEST?

In short, no. Pure kratom will not show up on any drug test. A NIDA5 (the most commonly used test) and even the enhanced 10-fold urine test, both will be negative if you have only consumed Kratom.

WHY IS NOTHING DISPLAYED?

The plant, Mitragyna speciosa, does not have the same chemical composition as the illegal drugs for which the drug test was made.

IS THERE EVEN A SMALL CHANCE IT WILL SHOW UP ON A DRUG TEST?

No. The only thing that would conclusively show kratom use would be a test designed specifically to detect residues of mitragynine and its metabolites in urine, and it is incredibly unlikely that one would ever encounter such a test.

WHAT ABOUT A FALSE POSITIVE?

And again, no. It is not possible for mitragynine and the other alkaloids contained in kratom to be found and produce a false positive. A false positive is much more likely to be caused by medications or supplements taken prior to the test, so it is very important to tell the person testing what medications or supplements you took. Ibuprofen and peseudoephedrine are very well known examples that affect the test. Even if someone eats a poppy seed bagel, it can create a false positive for opiates. This shows the sensitivity of these tests, but if Kratom is the only thing consumed, a false positive is incredibly unlikely. A second test would clearly prove that no drugs were taken.

So next time you feel trapped by the restrictive barriers of the monthly drug test, don’t fantasize about things you can’t have, but remember, you can relax and kick back with a warm cup of kratom tea. The high will be very calming, relaxing and best of all, undetectable.
